학습 자료 둘러보기 →The primary survey follows the ABCDE algorithm strictly. For an unconscious patient with traumatic brain injury, the highest priority is assessing Airway patency and Breathing pattern.
Loss of pharyngeal muscle tone can cause the tongue to obstruct the airway, and brain injury can depress the respiratory drive. Failure to secure the airway leads to hypoxia and hypercapnia, which cause secondary brain injury and drastically worsen outcomes.
Neurological assessments like pupillary response or Glasgow Coma Scale are part of "D" (Disability) and must be deferred until the airway and breathing are stabilized. A drop in SpO2 or rise in ETCO2 is a late sign of inadequate ventilation.
