학습 자료 둘러보기 →In an infant with RSV bronchiolitis, nasal flaring with subcostal and intercostal retractions indicates increased work of breathing and signals worsening lower-airway obstruction that requires immediate respiratory assessment and intervention.
Inflammation, edema, and mucus narrow the infant's already small airways. As airflow resistance rises, accessory muscles are recruited, producing visible retractions. Progressive fatigue may lead to hypoxemia, apnea, or respiratory failure.
Assess airway patency and pulse oximetry, elevate the head of the bed, perform gentle nasal suctioning, administer prescribed humidified oxygen, and escalate care for worsening distress, cyanosis, apnea, or fatigue.
