Assess for subtle signs of airway compromise: stridor, hoarseness, carbonaceous sputum, singed nasal hairs, or increased work of breathing. Edema can progress quickly, making delayed intubation difficult or impossible.
Never administer opioid analgesics before a full respiratory assessment. They can depress the respiratory drive and mask the clinical signs of impending airway obstruction. Fluid resuscitation using the Parkland formula is critical but is a secondary survey action after securing the airway.
