학습 자료 둘러보기 →The orbit is a closed bony compartment. After blunt trauma, a retrobulbar hematoma can elevate intraorbital pressure, leading to orbital compartment syndrome (OCS). Irreversible vision loss from optic nerve ischemia can occur within 60 to 120 minutes.
The earliest and most critical signs are severe, progressive eye pain accompanied by nausea and vomiting (often due to the oculocardiac reflex). These symptoms may precede physical findings like proptosis, a firm globe, or an afferent pupillary defect.
Do not dismiss nausea and vomiting as a systemic reaction to pain or an unrelated GI issue. In the context of blunt eye trauma, this combination is a sentinel sign of rising intraorbital pressure and requires immediate emergency physician notification for possible lateral canthotomy and cantholysis.
