학습 자료 둘러보기 →For a client with superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS) presenting with facial edema and orthopnea, the priority is to elevate the head of the bed to 45-90 degrees immediately. This uses gravity to promote venous drainage from the upper body, decreasing airway edema and easing work of breathing within seconds.
This is an independent nursing intervention that addresses the primary threat of airway compromise without requiring a provider order. Avoid supine positioning as it increases venous congestion and can worsen respiratory distress.
Do not delay positioning to administer medications like diuretics or corticosteroids. Pharmacological interventions are secondary and take time to reduce edema, whereas positioning provides immediate relief for the critical airway and perfusion risks associated with SVCS.
