학습 자료 둘러보기 →SVCS is a medical emergency caused by obstruction of the SVC, most commonly from a thoracic malignancy. The SVC is a thin-walled, low-pressure vessel; obstruction leads to venous congestion above the heart.
Hallmark assessment findings include facial edema, jugular vein distention (JVD), arm swelling, and dilated collateral veins on the chest. Clients may report dyspnea, dysphagia, and a sensation of head fullness.
This condition can rapidly progress to cerebral edema and airway compromise from laryngeal edema. Immediate nursing intervention includes elevating the head of the bed, administering oxygen, and notifying the provider for emergency radiation or stent placement.
