Lung cancer frequently spreads to bone via the vertebral venous plexus. Assess for pain that is constant, worse at night, and unrelieved by rest. An elevated serum calcium level above 10.5 mg/dL in this context is a hallmark of hypercalcemia of malignancy.
Do not dismiss new-onset back pain in a patient with known or suspected lung cancer as a benign strain. This requires immediate evaluation for pathologic fractures and spinal cord compression, which are oncologic emergencies.
