The classic presentation of a massive PE includes sudden onset of severe chest pain and shortness of breath. This results from a thrombus, often from a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the operative leg, obstructing pulmonary blood flow and causing right ventricular strain.
If sudden severe dyspnea or chest pain occurs, immediately apply oxygen, elevate the head of the bed, notify the Rapid Response Team, and prepare for emergency interventions. Do not mistake these signs for anxiety or simple incisional pain.
