Liver enzyme elevations fall into two patterns. A predominant rise in aminotransferases indicates hepatocellular injury, whereas a predominant rise in alkaline phosphatase indicates cholestasis. A concurrent rise in gamma-glutamyl transferase confirms that the alkaline phosphatase originates from the liver rather than from bone.
