While preparing naloxone, use a bag-valve-mask (BVM) to ventilate the patient if their respiratory effort is inadequate. Aim for a rate of 10-12 breaths per minute. Avoid aggressive ventilation to prevent gastric insufflation.
Naloxone has a shorter half-life than many opioids. The patient must be monitored for re-sedation and recurrent respiratory depression for several hours after the last dose. A continuous IV infusion may be required.
