학습 자료 둘러보기 →In a febrile child with the 3 C's (cough, coryza, conjunctivitis), inspect the buccal mucosa opposite the molars. The presence of Koplik spots—small, irregular, bright red lesions with bluish-white centers—confirms the diagnosis of rubeola in the prodromal stage.
These spots appear 1 to 2 days before the characteristic maculopapular rash and may resemble grains of salt on a red background. They are transient and may slough off as the rash appears, so a good light source is essential for visualization.
Do not rely solely on Koplik spots for screening; they are documented in only about 23.7% of suspected measles cases. Their absence does not rule out measles. Implement airborne precautions immediately if measles is suspected.
