학습 자료 둘러보기 →The most immediate threat after a caustic ingestion is airway compromise from severe oropharyngeal and laryngeal edema, not the chemical burn itself. The critical triad of drooling, inability to swallow, and a muffled voice indicates deep, liquefactive necrosis and functional obstruction.
A muffled or "hot potato" voice is a direct sign of perilaryngeal swelling. Drooling signifies the child cannot manage even oral secretions, marking a pre-obstructive state. This can rapidly progress to complete airway loss, necessitating immediate preparation for difficult airway management and possible surgical intervention.
Never attempt blind nasotracheal suctioning, induce vomiting, or give oral neutralizing agents. These actions can worsen injury or trigger complete obstruction. Keep the child NPO and in a position of comfort, and have emergency airway equipment and a surgical airway kit immediately available.
