Apply a loose, sterile gauze dressing over the ear to collect drainage. This creates a barrier without obstructing flow, which could cause retrograde contamination of the cranial cavity.
Never irrigate the ear, insert objects (including cotton-tipped applicators), or instill drops. These actions can introduce pathogens directly into the subarachnoid space. Observe drainage for the halo sign (a clear ring around blood on gauze) indicating CSF.
