학습 자료 둘러보기 →Suspect mastoiditis in a patient with recent or concurrent acute otitis media who develops postauricular tenderness and swelling over the mastoid process. The auricle may be displaced inferiorly and anteriorly.
The hallmark sign is focal erythema, edema, and pain on palpation directly over the mastoid bone, posterior to the ear. This reflects infection extending beyond the middle ear into the bony air cells.
Do not rely solely on otoscopic findings. A normal-appearing tympanic membrane does not rule out mastoiditis, as the infection has spread beyond the middle ear space. Prompt imaging with a CT scan is indicated to assess for subperiosteal abscess or intracranial complications.
