This neurological decline indicates the brain's inability to compensate for metabolic toxins, placing the patient at risk for seizures, coma, and irreversible brain damage. Immediate intervention with urgent hemodialysis is required to rapidly clear these toxins.
Do not attribute altered mental status to fatigue or depression in a uremic patient. It is an acute, life-threatening change that takes priority over chronic symptoms like pruritus, frost, or dysgeusia. Always prioritize a neurological assessment using the ABC framework, as a declining mental status can compromise the airway.
