학습 자료 둘러보기 →The most critical indicator of a life-threatening rise in intracranial pressure (ICP) is the triad of sudden severe headache, projectile vomiting, and altered level of consciousness. This pattern signals direct brainstem compression and imminent herniation.
Projectile vomiting in this context is a central neurological reflex, not a gastrointestinal issue. Increased pressure in the posterior fossa directly stimulates the vomiting center in the medulla oblongata, causing sudden, forceful emesis without preceding nausea.
Do not mistake this for a GI problem or delay intervention to administer antiemetics. This is a sign of a failing brainstem. Immediate notification of the provider and preparation for emergency ICP management, such as hyperosmolar therapy or surgical decompression, is required.
