학습 자료 둘러보기 →A single temperature of 38.3°C (101°F) or a sustained temperature over 38°C (100.4°F) for an hour in a patient with an absolute neutrophil count (ANC) below 500-1,000/mm³ is a medical emergency called febrile neutropenia.
The first and most critical action is to implement strict neutropenic precautions immediately. This includes placing the patient in a private room, enforcing rigorous hand hygiene for all, and restricting visitors with any signs of illness or recent live vaccinations.
Do not rely on classic signs of infection. In a neutropenic host, fever may be the only sign of a life-threatening infection, as the body cannot mount a typical inflammatory response with pus, redness, or swelling.
Promptly obtain blood cultures and administer broad-spectrum IV antibiotics within 1 hour of fever onset as ordered. Delaying treatment significantly increases mortality risk from gram-negative bacteremia.
