Who chairs the CPD Council
Under the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Act of 2016 (Republic Act 10912), each regulated profession has a CPD Council under the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). Each profession's CPD Council is chaired by a member of its professional regulatory board, so the CPD Council for Nursing is chaired by a member of the Board of Nursing. The council's other members are the president of the accredited professional organization and a representative of the national organization of deans or department heads of schools of that profession.
| CPD Council for Nursing | Who |
|---|
| Chairperson | A member of the Board of Nursing |
| Member | President of the accredited integrated professional organization of nurses |
| Member | Representative of the national organization of deans of nursing schools |
What the CPD Council does
The council implements CPD for its profession. It evaluates and accredits CPD providers and programs, assesses applications for CPD units from activities such as self-directed learning, and monitors compliance. Its work links directly to licensure: registered nurses must complete the required CPD units to renew the professional identification card (PIC). The nurse educator in the scenario needs to know this structure to guide staff in choosing accredited activities and applying for units.
Why the other options are wrong
The president of the accredited professional organization is a member of the council, not its chairperson. The PRC chairperson heads the commission as a whole, which supervises all the professional regulatory boards, but does not chair each profession's CPD Council. The representative of the deans' organization is also a member, not the chair.
Watch out! Three of the options name actual council members or PRC officials, so recognizing a familiar title is not enough. Remember that the regulatory board, the body that also regulates licensure, leads the council.
Exam takeaway
Key point! The CPD Council for Nursing is chaired by a member of the Board of Nursing, with the professional organization president and a deans' organization representative as members.
