학습 자료 둘러보기 →A respiratory rate of 8 breaths per minute or less, especially with shallow breathing, is a sentinel sign of opioid-induced respiratory depression (OIRD). This is a direct, life-threatening toxic effect, not a common side effect.
The priority nursing action is to immediately stimulate the patient and call for help. If unresponsive or not improving, prepare to administer naloxone per protocol while supporting ventilations with a bag-valve-mask.
Do not confuse expected sedation (drowsy but easily arousable) with the blunted respiratory drive of OIRD. A decreasing respiratory rate is a late and critical sign that can rapidly progress to respiratory arrest.
