Tasks appropriate for UAPs are those that are non-invasive, repetitive, and do not require clinical judgment. Examples include assisting with ambulation, bathing, feeding stable patients, and obtaining vital signs on stable patients.
The RN must never delegate tasks that involve the core of the nursing process. This includes initial or ongoing assessment, development of the care plan, health teaching, and evaluation of patient outcomes.
Medication administration of any route, including oral, topical, or injectable, is strictly prohibited from being delegated to a UAP. This also applies to any intravenous therapy-related tasks.
