Prioritize assessment of oxygen saturation levels, respiratory rate, work of breathing, lung sounds, and mental status. Evaluate the patient’s response to prescribed oxygen therapy and report worsening respiratory distress promptly.
Systemic corticosteroids can cause hyperglycemia, so blood glucose monitoring is also needed. However, glucose monitoring does not take priority over immediate assessment of oxygenation in an acute COPD exacerbation.
