학습 자료 둘러보기 →The tripod position and muffled voice are cardinal, late signs of critical supraglottic edema in epiglottitis, indicating the child is actively compensating to maintain a patent airway and is at high risk for rapid decompensation.
Any child with suspected epiglottitis who is anxious, drooling, and assuming the tripod posture must have immediate airway management prioritized over all other assessments, including IV access or laboratory studies.
Never attempt to visualize the oropharynx with a tongue depressor or agitate the child. This can trigger laryngospasm and complete airway loss. Keep the child calm, allow a position of comfort, and urgently mobilize an anesthesia or ENT team for definitive airway control.
