학습 자료 둘러보기 →The most critical finding indicating a complication of acute otitis media is purulent otorrhea. This signifies a tympanic membrane perforation, where the infection has drained from the middle ear into the external canal.
In contrast, a red, bulging, immobile tympanic membrane is the classic diagnostic sign for uncomplicated AOM. Associated symptoms like mild conductive hearing loss and balance problems are common extensions of the middle ear inflammation.
Do not irrigate the ear canal if drainage is present. The character of the drainage (purulent vs. clear) must be documented. Clear drainage could indicate a cerebrospinal fluid leak, requiring a different emergency response.
