학습 자료 둘러보기 →The gold standard for diagnosing Acute Otitis Media (AOM) is visualization of a bulging, erythematous tympanic membrane with decreased mobility on pneumatic otoscopy. This reflects a purulent middle ear effusion under positive pressure.
Pneumatic otoscopy is essential. A normal eardrum moves briskly with insufflation. In AOM, the fluid-filled middle ear space prevents vibration, making the membrane immobile. Document mobility as normal, decreased, or absent.
Do not confuse AOM with otitis externa, where pain is elicited by pulling the auricle and the ear canal is swollen. Clear watery discharge may indicate a cerebrospinal fluid leak, especially after trauma, requiring urgent evaluation.
