학습 자료 둘러보기 →The hallmark of acute otitis media (AOM) is a bulging, erythematous tympanic membrane with limited mobility on pneumatic otoscopy. This reflects purulent effusion under pressure in the middle ear.
Use pneumatic otoscopy to confirm immobility. A normal TM moves briskly with insufflation; an effusion restricts this movement. Visualizing an air-fluid level or bubbles suggests a serous effusion, not acute infection.
Do not rely on erythema alone; crying or fever can cause TM redness. The bulging and impaired mobility are the most specific indicators of AOM. A perforation with drainage indicates a late-stage complication or chronic condition.
