Intervene with back blows and chest thrusts only if the child's cough becomes ineffective or they show signs of severe obstruction (unable to cry, make sounds, or breathe).
Never perform a blind finger sweep, as it can push the object deeper. Avoid abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver) in children under 1 year due to risk of organ injury.
