Bathe the child in lukewarm water for 5-10 minutes. This hydrates the stratum corneum and removes crusts and irritants without causing vasodilation and itching like hot water.
Immediately after bathing, gently pat the skin dry, leaving it slightly damp. Apply a fragrance-free emollient (cream or ointment) within 3 minutes to seal in the absorbed water and reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
Topical corticosteroids, if prescribed, should be applied to the affected areas before the emollient and only on dry skin to prevent dilution and increased systemic absorption. Never use harsh or antibacterial soaps.
