Palpation reveals an enlarged spleen, often extending below the left costal margin. The stretching of the splenic capsule causes tenderness. Splenic size typically peaks 2 to 3 weeks after symptom onset.
Avoid deep palpation if splenomegaly is suspected to prevent splenic rupture, a life-threatening complication. Advise patients to strictly avoid contact sports and heavy lifting for at least 3 to 4 weeks or until splenomegaly resolves.
