학습 자료 둘러보기 →The most critical complication of bulbar polio is respiratory compromise due to aspiration or airway obstruction. Assessment findings of dysphagia and pooling of oral secretions indicate paralysis of pharyngeal and laryngeal muscles, placing the child at immediate risk for respiratory arrest.
Nursing intervention follows the ABC priority framework. Position the patient to facilitate drainage of secretions (side-lying or semi-prone), have suction equipment set up and ready at the bedside, and maintain NPO status until a full swallowing evaluation is completed. Continuous monitoring of oxygen saturation and respiratory effort is essential.
Do not confuse spinal polio (flaccid paralysis of extremities) with bulbar polio. While muscle weakness is a significant deficit, it does not pose the same immediate threat to the airway as bulbar involvement. Never administer oral fluids or medications to a patient with suspected dysphagia before a formal assessment.
