학습 자료 둘러보기 →After a stapedectomy, the normal pressure-buffering mechanism of the ossicular chain is bypassed. Any sudden increase in middle ear pressure, such as from a Valsalva maneuver, is transmitted directly to the oval window.
Instruct the patient to strictly avoid coughing, sneezing (with a closed mouth), and nose blowing for at least 2-3 weeks. If a sneeze is unavoidable, the mouth must be kept open to release pressure.
Failure to maintain these precautions can displace the prosthesis, disrupt the oval window seal, or cause a perilymph fistula, leading to sudden vertigo and permanent sensorineural hearing loss.
