Assess function by asking the patient to raise eyebrows, squeeze eyes shut, smile, and show teeth. Observe for symmetry. Any new or progressive deficit must be reported immediately.
Do not position the patient on the affected side. Maintain the head of bed elevated to 30 degrees to minimize edema. Never remove the surgical packing; this is a surgeon-specific task.
