학습 자료 둘러보기 →The hallmark of otitis externa is intense pain upon manipulation of the external ear. This is elicited by the tragal sign (pressure on the tragus) or tugging on the auricle.
This pain occurs because the skin of the external canal is tightly adherent to the underlying cartilage. Inflammation and edema in this confined space cause severe pain when the cartilage is moved.
Do not confuse with acute otitis media, where pain is typically not exacerbated by external manipulation. Otitis media often presents with fever and a bulging tympanic membrane.
