Immediate intervention is required to prevent macular involvement. If the macula detaches, central vision loss can become permanent. The goal is to refer for laser retinopexy or cryotherapy within 24 hours of symptom onset.
Do not delay referral for gradual, chronic symptoms. A patient with a history of high myopia or recent eye trauma is at higher risk. Instruct the patient to avoid strenuous activity and keep their head in a position that may prevent detachment extension until evaluated.
