Unrelieved distension increases intravesical pressure, worsening urine extravasation into the peritoneal cavity or surrounding tissues. This can rapidly lead to chemical peritonitis, sepsis, and acute kidney injury.
A standard urethral catheter insertion attempt is contraindicated if a urethral injury is suspected. Immediate intervention requires preparation for a suprapubic catheter insertion by the provider to decompress the bladder safely.
