학습 자료 둘러보기 →The hallmark of dialysis disequilibrium syndrome (DDS) is cerebral edema caused by a reverse osmotic gradient. Rapid removal of urea from the blood, but not the brain, pulls water into brain cells. This is most common during the first few dialysis sessions in patients with severe uremia.
The most critical indicator is the acute onset of neurological symptoms. Monitor for severe headache, nausea and vomiting, and a rapid progression to confusion or decreased responsiveness. These signs reflect increasing intracranial pressure.
Do not dismiss a new headache during dialysis as benign. Early recognition is vital to prevent progression to seizures, coma, or death. Immediately differentiate DDS from common complications like intradialytic hypotension or simple muscle cramps.
