학습 자료 둘러보기 →The hallmark of a pleural effusion on percussion is dullness to flatness. Fluid is denser than air, so sound transmission is dampened. This finding is often accompanied by decreased or absent breath sounds over the effusion.
To distinguish from other conditions: Hyperresonance suggests a pneumothorax (air). Increased tactile fremitus and bronchial breath sounds point to consolidation (e.g., pneumonia), not a simple effusion.
Assess for tracheal deviation. A large effusion can shift the trachea away from the affected side, while a large pneumothorax can also cause deviation. Always correlate with chest X-ray findings.
