학습 자료 둘러보기 →In ALS, respiratory muscle weakness is the primary cause of mortality. The most critical finding is hypoventilation, indicated by decreased breath sounds in the bases and shallow respirations.
This signals the patient cannot maintain adequate tidal volume or gas exchange. Immediate intervention includes notifying the provider, preparing for noninvasive ventilation (e.g., BiPAP), and obtaining an arterial blood gas analysis.
Do not delay intervention for signs of respiratory decline. Fasciculations, fine motor loss, and emotional lability are expected ALS manifestations and do not require emergency intervention unless they directly compromise the airway, breathing, or circulation.
