Instruct the patient to instill artificial tears every 1-2 hours while awake and apply a lubricating ointment at night. During the day, wear wrap-around glasses or a moisture chamber to shield against wind and debris.
Never instruct the patient to use a standard flat eye patch over an eye that cannot close, as the patch can rub against the open cornea and cause severe abrasion. Use a moisture chamber instead.
