학습 자료 둘러보기 →The first priority during an active generalized tonic-clonic seizure is to turn the patient to the lateral recumbent position (recovery position). This uses gravity to maintain airway patency and allows oral secretions or emesis to drain, preventing aspiration.
Do not insert any object (e.g., padded tongue blade) into the patient's mouth. The jaw muscles are tightly contracted, and forcing an object can cause dental fractures, oral lacerations, or create a foreign body airway obstruction.
Do not restrain the patient's limbs. Restraint against the force of the seizure can result in musculoskeletal injuries such as fractures or joint dislocations. Instead, remove nearby objects and pad the environment.
Administering oxygen via face mask is a secondary action. Ensure the airway is cleared and the patient is positioned to drain secretions first, as applying a mask without a patent airway can increase aspiration risk. Suction equipment should be readily available.
