Position the patient in a lateral recumbent (recovery) position to maintain a patent airway and allow secretions to drain, reducing aspiration risk. Keep suction equipment ready at the bedside.
Do not assume the airway is secure once the convulsive activity stops. Airway occlusion from tongue relaxation or secretions can occur silently. Neurological checks are secondary to ensuring adequate oxygenation.
