Avoid any neck flexion, rotation, or hip flexion greater than 90 degrees. These positions can compress the jugular veins, obstructing venous drainage and causing a rapid, passive increase in intracranial blood volume.
Do not encourage coughing or deep breathing exercises. The Valsalva maneuver increases intrathoracic pressure, which is transmitted to the cranial vault and can dangerously elevate ICP. Suctioning should be limited and preceded by pre-oxygenation.
