학습 자료 둘러보기 →Decerebrate posturing is a critical sign of severe brainstem injury or herniation. It presents as rigid extension of the arms and legs with forearm pronation and plantar flexion.
This finding indicates a threat to the midbrain and upper pons, requiring an immediate response to prevent irreversible damage. It is a more urgent priority than a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 12 or isolated hypertension.
Do not confuse decerebrate posturing with decorticate posturing (arm flexion, leg extension). Decerebrate posturing suggests a lower, more severe level of brainstem damage and is a precursor to terminal herniation.
