The physiological sequence begins with a massive sympathetic discharge causing systolic hypertension to maintain cerebral perfusion. The baroreceptor response to this hypertension triggers a vagal reflex, resulting in bradycardia. The irregular breathing pattern signals direct compression of the medullary respiratory centers.
Do not misinterpret the bradycardia and hypertension as a stable or improving condition. Cushing's triad is a sign of decompensation, not compensation. Immediate notification of the provider and preparation for emergency interventions to lower ICP are critical.
