This posture creates a posterior pelvic tilt, flattens the lumbar spine, and widens the intervertebral foramen, directly relieving pressure on the compressed nerve root.
Intradiscal pressure is lowest when lying supine and significantly higher during sitting or forward bending. For clients whose pain decreases when lying flat, maintaining a non-weight-bearing position is essential to break the pain-spasm cycle.
Avoid positions that increase axial loading, such as sitting upright or standing. Do not initiate active range of motion exercises during an acute exacerbation, as movement can further protrude the disc and worsen nerve compression.
