A patient is positive for hepatitis B surface antigen and for IgM antibody to hepatitis B core antigen. How should this pattern be interpreted?

해설
A positive surface antigen indicates current infection, and IgM antibody to the core antigen indicates recent infection. Together they define acute infection. In chronic infection the core antibody has switched to IgG, and in vaccine-induced immunity only the surface antibody is positive.
