Understanding Febrile Neutropenia in Pediatric Oncology
In a child undergoing chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), an absolute neutrophil count (ANC) of 200/mm³ represents severe neutropenia. Neutrophils are the body's primary defense against bacterial and fungal infections. With a count this low, the child has virtually no innate immune capability to contain an infection. A fever of 101.5°F (38.6°C) in this context is a medical emergency defined as febrile neutropenia (FN). The fever is often the only initial sign of a rapidly progressing, life-threatening bloodstream infection because the body cannot mount a typical inflammatory response (pus, swelling, localized pain).
Why Immediate Antibiotic Administration is the Priority
The highest priority intervention is to immediately notify the oncologist and prepare for the prompt administration of broad-spectrum antibiotics. Option 3: Place the child in protective isolation.
