Use a routine, non-confrontational excuse to separate the pair, such as stating, "It's our policy to have time alone with each patient for a physical assessment" or needing a urine sample. Interview the client in a private, soundproof room.
Never confront the suspected abuser or provide resource pamphlets while the partner is present. This can precipitate an escalation of violence. If the partner refuses to leave, document the refusal and the partner's behavior, and prioritize the client's safety in all subsequent interactions.
