학습 자료 둘러보기 →Denial is an unconscious refusal to accept a painful reality. A client stating "The doctors must be wrong" after a terminal diagnosis is not just seeking a second opinion but rejecting the fact itself. This often serves as a temporary buffer against overwhelming anxiety.
Nurses should assess the client's coping patterns and support system. Allow the client to verbalize feelings without confronting or reinforcing the denial prematurely. The goal is to provide presence and gently explore the meaning behind the statement, such as asking, "What concerns you most about this diagnosis?"
Do not argue with the client or force them to accept the diagnosis. Maladaptive denial that prevents treatment or endangers safety requires interdisciplinary collaboration, but initial denial is a normal part of the grief process. Monitor for signs of dysfunctional coping over time.
