Assess for signs of hypoglycemia: jitteriness, irritability, lethargy, poor feeding, and temperature instability. However, many newborns are asymptomatic, so routine glucose screening per protocol is essential. The target glucose level is typically >40-45 mg/dL.
Do not delay intervention for a symptomatic newborn to obtain a lab result. If hypoglycemia is suspected, initiate early feeding or administer IV dextrose immediately to prevent seizures and brain injury.
