학습 자료 둘러보기 →The most critical red flag for pathological jaundice is onset within the first 24 hours of life. This is often caused by hemolytic disease (ABO/Rh incompatibility) and requires immediate investigation with total serum bilirubin (TSB) levels.
Physiological jaundice never appears in the first 24 hours. It typically becomes visible on days 2 to 4, peaks around days 3 to 5, and resolves within 1 to 2 weeks. The progression is gradual, moving cephalocaudally from head to trunk.
Any visible jaundice in the first 24 hours is a medical emergency. Do not delay intervention while waiting for lab results. Assess for risk factors like maternal blood type, family history of hemolytic disease, and signs of acute bilirubin encephalopathy (lethargy, poor feeding, high-pitched cry).
